Today is Return from Exile Day. Traditionally, this is the day that drinking establishments, in their many forms, forgive and give one more chance, just one by God, to patrons who, for reasons perhaps best not dredged back up, have been eighty-sixed, banned, or otherwise barred from entry. Since Roman times, or so the legend goes, this is the golden day that shunned heads meekly protruded into doorways and looked for that forgiving nod from whomever was running the show. If you’ve been banished from a place of drinking, today is the day to make amends and slide back in. If the bouncer or bartender gives you a cruel stare, make sure you hip them up as to what day it is.
